The fortress in Nepolomice became to be built in a middle of 14th century by order of Casimir III the Great. The castle was the favourite place of stay for the king, but its heyday came not until the time of Wladyslaw II Jagiello reign. There were held courts, meetings of the king and his board and hunting parties with company of foreign guests as well. Sigismund I the Old entertained the refurbishment of the castle, but its final shape the residence gained during Sigismund II Augustus reign. The bound of castle's prosperity was brought with Swedish invasion. In 1655 Niepolomice were robbed, a church was destroyed and castle was partly arranged as a food warehouse. Austrians settled in the town after Poland's partition in 1772. They adopted the building to barracks and pulled down the second floor. It became a public building in a time between the world wars and after the Second World War. There were placed municipal premises, telephone exchange and even delivery room. The castle became a property of Niepolomice municipality in 1991. Then the complex restoration works were made. These works were hard and expensive. The castle required not only cosmetic works, but also strengthening of construction and drainage. Beautiful renaissance architectonic details attiring windows, chambers, entrance gate were renovated. Nowadays the castle plays role of business and cultural centre. There are organised numerous concerts, exhibitions, business meetings, wedding ceremonies, banquets and on attic also runs three-star hotel with capacity of 55 guests as well as Conference Centre named by Lech Walesa.
